Downtown Grand Falls History

The Broadway Boulevard, the widest street east of Winnipeg, is 1.2 km long and 125 feet wide from sidewalk to sidewalk. The main street's width is attributed to its previous use as a parade ground for soldiers.

Broadway Boulevard became an official boulevard in 1931 when construction was undertaken during the Great Depression to create employment for local workers.

The town paid $18,000 of the total cost of $36,000 with the government providing the remainder of the funds. The contractors managing the project were W.M. Costigan and Everett McCluskey while the mayor at the time was F.W Pirie Sr. who was later appointed to the Senate.
